What makes a good pole top: staying put upside down

A pole top is engineered to do two jobs at once: hold the bust securely through spins, climbs, and inversions, and keep specific patches of skin, mostly the waist, sides, and parts of the back, reliably bare for grip. Everyday activewear usually does one of those jobs. A pole top has to do both while the body is upside down.

Why does a pole top expose so much skin?

For the same reason pole shorts clear the inner thigh: skin is the grip surface. X-Pole's attire guide puts it directly: more skin exposure means better grip, because the skin of the arms, legs, and torso provides the friction that holds you on the pole. What actually keeps a top in place upside down?

The band, mostly. When you invert, gravity flips: everything that hung down now wants to slide toward your head, and a loose top goes with it. How much support does a pole top need?

It scales with the work. Queen Wear's guide splits it by intensity: light to medium support can be enough for low-impact choreography and floor work, while dynamic spins, conditioning, and fast transitions call for stronger support. Since more structure usually means more fabric, support and grip access pull against each other too, which is why many dancers own more than one level of top.

Can't a regular sports bra do the job?

Often it nearly can, which is why beginners start in one. But a running or yoga bra is built for a body that stays upright. Les Polettes states the difference plainly: standard sports bras do not always hold up against the specific constraints of pole, namely direct pole contact, grip demands, and inversions. A pole top is the same idea rebuilt around those constraints: anchored band, stable straps, snap-back fabric, and skin left bare exactly where the pole needs it.
