Compression, coverage, and grip: how activewear behaves on a pole vs in the gym

Activewear behaves differently on a pole than in a gym because the two settings ask fabric for opposite things: the gym rewards covered, compressed, low-friction surfaces, and the pole rewards bare skin and high friction at specific contact points. The same excellent leggings can be ideal for a deadlift session and useless for a pole climb without anything being wrong with the leggings. Why does coverage help in the gym and cost you on the pole?
